For couples who want adventure, nature, and a wedding weekend to remember
If the idea of a traditional wedding venue doesn’t quite feel like you, a campground wedding might just be your dream setup.
I recently photographed a wedding near Sisters, Oregon where the couple rented out an entire campground for their celebration. Friends and family brought campers and tents, everyone stayed the weekend together, and the whole thing felt more like a meaningful getaway than a one-day event.
It was cozy, intentional, wildly fun, and honestly one of the most memorable wedding days I’ve seen. The amount of intention behind every single detail was sooooo moving.
If you’re an outdoorsy couple dreaming of a wedding that feels relaxed, adventurous, and deeply personal, here’s how to pull off a beautiful campground wedding in the Pacific Northwest.
Why Choose a Campground Wedding?
Campground weddings are perfect for couples who:
• Love the outdoors
• Want a laid-back, non-traditional vibe
• Prefer experiences over formalities
• Want more time with their people
• Feel at home in nature
Instead of a rushed timeline, you get a whole weekend with your favorite humans, campfires included.
Step 1: Reserve the Right Campground
Many state parks and national forest campgrounds allow group reservations or full buyouts.
Look for campgrounds that offer:
• Group sites or reservable loops
• Open meadow or gathering areas
• Restroom access
• Parking for guests
• Space for tents or RVs
Some campgrounds book up far in advance, especially in summer, so early planning helps a lot.
Step 2: Check Permits & Rules
Every campground is different.
You may need:
• A special use permit
• Event approval
• Noise compliance
• Guest count limits
Calling the ranger station directly is often the best way to get clear answers.
Step 3: Bring in Your Vendors
Campground weddings are DIY in the best way.
Couples often bring in:
• A catering team or food trucks
• A tent for reception coverage
• Tables and chairs
• A dance floor
• Portable bar setups
• Florals that match the natural setting
The result feels curated but still connected to nature.
Step 4: Plan for Comfort
The PNW is beautiful but unpredictable.
Think about:
• Shade or rain cover
• Blankets for chilly evenings
• Bug spray stations
• Cozy lighting (string lights, lanterns, candles)
• Extra seating for older guests
A little preparation goes a long way.
Step 5: Lean Into the Experience
The best campground weddings don’t try to feel like ballroom weddings.
They embrace:
• Campfires
• Lawn games
• Acoustic music
• Slow mornings with coffee and friends
• Sunset portraits in the trees
• Starry-night conversations
It’s about connection, not perfection.
Why Campground Weddings Photograph So Beautifully
Nature does most of the decorating.
You get:
• Golden-hour light through the trees
• Forest backdrops
• Cozy candid moments
• Genuine laughter and relaxed energy
It creates images that feel real and timeless.
A Little Note From Me
Some of the best wedding days I’ve seen aren’t the fanciest — they’re the ones where couples feel fully present and surrounded by the people they love doing things that they love.
If your dream wedding includes pine trees, mountain air, and a weekend spent celebrating instead of rushing, a campground wedding might be exactly your vibe.
And if you want a photographer who’s down for the adventure and ready to capture the real moments as they unfold, I’d love to be there for it.
